Note: This review contains spoilers. Three years after Resident Evil blew up the gaming world with a new genre title ("survival horror"), Silent Hill was released to immediate critical acclaim. Neither of these were the first horror games in existence - Resident Evil was initially meant as a remake of Sweet Home for the NES, one of the earliest horror games - but both set forth the tropes and style that all subsequent games would follow. Both took tank controls and odd camera angels from the PC classic Alone in the Dark , and Silent Hill feels far more that game's child than Resident Evil , despite the latter having a similar setting. [Game Review] Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Super Metroid

Note: This review may contain spoilers. If you ever wondered why the genre was called Metroidvania , look no further. Neither of these games are the first in their respective series, but both would become the icons from which all subsequent entries would be compared to, not to speak of the genre at large. Super Metroid in particular casts such a shadow on the entire genre and Nintendo in general that it has entered the upper echelon of the gaming canon. The genre reached most of its defining characteristics with these two games, with Super Metroid setting the standard for "show don't tell" in teaching game mechanics and mechanics as exploration keys, and Symphony of the Night integrating Action-RPG mechanics and tight combat that, if you were me, should give you distinct Dark Souls vibes. Note: This review contains spoilers! The walking simulator is a contentious game genre. Descendants of the Adventure game, walking simulators usually create a narrow path for you to follow as the environment lays out plot details obvious as billboards or a voice over spells out someone's internal crisis or some such thing. For most, it isn't a game, it's a ride. Games such as Jazzpunk play with this formula to give you at least some interactivity or to wallpaper the level with jokes and references, but if there is no objective or system to play, then there is no game and therefore no reason for it to exist for a lot of people. Objective seems to be the opportune word here: what counts as an objective and what doesn't? After all, the objective of a walking simulator is to get to the end, to find the notes that tell the story, and to experience the story.
